What is QR Code Scanning?

QR code scanning reads the content of a QR code from an image or directly via camera. The scanner decodes the black-and-white pattern and returns the stored data as readable text, whether it is a URL, text, or structured data.

Formidex can scan QR codes from uploaded images as well as directly through your webcam or phone camera. Recognition runs entirely locally with no data sent to external servers.

Beyond decoding, Formidex also indicates the data type: URL, text, WiFi configuration, vCard, or other formats. This way you know exactly what the QR code contains before using the content.

How does QR Code Scanning work?

The scanner first locates the three position markers in the corners of the QR code. Using these markers, the perspective is corrected and the module grid is aligned. Then individual modules (black or white) are read and the data is decoded.

In camera mode, the scanner continuously analyzes video frames. As soon as a valid QR code is detected, it is automatically decoded and the result displayed. Recognition works even in poor lighting and from various angles.

Tips for best results

When scanning via camera, ensure sufficient lighting and a steady hold. The QR code should fill the camera view as large and sharp as possible. Reflections on glossy surfaces can interfere with recognition.

For QR codes in images, make sure the code is not too small or heavily compressed. JPEG artifacts can render the fine modules of a QR code unreadable. When in doubt, use a higher-resolution version of the image.

Always verify URLs from QR codes before opening them. QR codes can point to malicious websites. Formidex shows you the full URL so you can check it before visiting. Pay special attention to unknown or suspicious-looking domains.

Common use cases

Read QR codes from screenshots: received a screenshot containing a QR code and want to know what's behind it? Upload the image and Formidex decodes the content instantly.

Security check: before scanning a QR code with your smartphone and automatically opening the URL, you can first verify the code with Formidex. This shows the full destination address and helps you avoid phishing traps.

Process multiple QR codes quickly: when you need to read many QR codes in succession, the upload function is faster than scanning with your smartphone camera. Simply drag images into the tool one after another.
