What is Image Metadata?

Image metadata is invisible information stored in every image file. The most important type is EXIF data (Exchangeable Image File Format), automatically written by the camera. It contains capture date, camera model, exposure settings, and often the GPS location.

Beyond technical data, metadata can also include IPTC information: title, description, copyright, and keywords. Professional photographers use these fields to catalog their images and embed copyright notices.

Formidex reads your image metadata and displays it clearly. You can view the information without sending the image file to an external service. Everything happens locally in your browser.

How does the Metadata tool work?

The tool reads EXIF, IPTC, and XMP data directly from the image file. This information is stored in special segments of the file and is not normally displayed when opening the image. The tool decodes these segments and presents the information in a readable format.

Particularly important is the GPS section: many smartphones automatically store the capture location in EXIF data. This can be a privacy risk when you publish photos taken at home or other private locations online.

Tips for best results

Always check metadata before publishing a photo. GPS coordinates can reveal your exact location. Many social media platforms automatically strip EXIF data, but not all services do.

Camera model information can be useful when comparing photos or wanting to know which device captured an image. Exposure time, aperture, and ISO value also help understand shooting conditions.

The capture date in EXIF data is often more reliable than the file modification date. If you want to sort photos chronologically, EXIF data provides a better foundation.

Common use cases

Check privacy: before posting a photo online, verify whether GPS coordinates are included. This prevents accidentally revealing your home address or other private locations.

Analyze shooting conditions: photographers use metadata to review the settings of successful shots. Aperture, exposure time, ISO, and focal length help with learning and improvement.

Organize photos: capture date, camera model, and any keywords help sort and search large photo collections. Many image management programs use this metadata for automatic categorization.
