What is Background Removal?
Automatic background removal detects the main subject of an image and separates it from the background. The result is a cutout on a transparent background that you can use however you like.
In professional image editing, cutting out subjects used to be tedious manual work. AI models have revolutionized this process: within seconds, the neural network identifies where the foreground ends and the background begins.
Formidex uses the RMBG-1.4 model, running entirely in your browser. Unlike cloud services, your images never leave your device. No account, no credits, and no internet connection needed after the initial model download.
How does Background Removal work?
The AI model analyzes every pixel of your image and creates a segmentation mask. This mask determines for each pixel whether it belongs to the foreground or background. The better the contrast between subject and background, the more precise the mask.
If your browser supports WebGPU, the model runs on your graphics card, significantly speeding up processing. Without WebGPU, computation runs via WebAssembly, which takes a bit longer but works just as reliably.
Tips for best results
Images with clear contrast between foreground and background yield the best results. Evenly lit product photos on solid backgrounds work particularly well.
Use high-resolution images when possible. The more detail the model can detect, the cleaner the transition between subject and background. This makes a big difference especially with fine structures like hair.
If the result isn't perfect, try cropping the image first so the main subject takes up a larger portion. This helps the model set the focus correctly.
Common use cases
In e-commerce, product photo cutouts are essential. Whether for your own store or marketplaces like Amazon and eBay: products on white backgrounds are standard and proven to increase sales.
For application photos, profile pictures, and passport photos, a neutral background is often required. With background removal, you can use your existing photo and replace the background with a suitable color.
Content creators use cutout images for social media posts, YouTube thumbnails, and presentations. A transparent background gives you maximum flexibility when composing your designs.
